Bottom Line Up Front:

The Razor MX650 is a full-sized dirt bike, capable of handling nearly all off-road situations that a larger – and much more expensive – gas bike could handle.

While officially listed for 16+ yr olds, like most Razor products younger riders can easily handle this if they’re properly equipped and trained. But make no mistake – this is a real motorcycle, with full-sized performance in an affordable and QUIET package.

Razor MX650 Dirt Rocket Electric Dirt Bike Review

The MX650 is Razor’s largest, top of the line electric dirt bike. It has the size and performance to handle whatever you’ll throw at it, but in a more affordable and FAR quieter package than similarly sized gasoline-powered dirt bikes. Your neighbors will be thankful!

As with most Razor electric products, the official age ranking is usually higher than the reality of most actual users. Razor officially (probably for legal reasons, who knows) says this is for 16+ yr olds. And given the 17 mph top speed and 220 lb weight limit, this bike can certainly handle riders that size. But a properly trained and equipped younger rider could handle this as well. In fact, while an older teen or adult can certainly ride this, they might find it a bit cramped.

As always, use your judgment, wear all appropriate safety gear, read the instructions, and supervise youngsters. Remember – this is a real mini-motorcycle.

Two of the big advantages of an electric model – besides a lower price – are a fast but reasonable maximum speed and a noise level acceptable for suburbia. But this is still a machine that requires respect. Treat it with that respect and it will reward you.

Pre-teens that are ready, teens, and even the occasional adult will be the king of the dirt hill on the MX650.

The MX650 in action

This 8 year old can’t get enough of his recent Christmas gift:

And on a personal note, my brother-in-law has both an MX350 and an MX650 for his 10 and 12 yr old. They’re big for their ages, especially the 12 year old. While they did enjoy the MX350, they’ve both outgrown it, but they’re still going strong on the MX650 and likely will for some time.

Things that are great about it:
  • Solid performance, reliable Razor quality
  • Versatile – sized for younger riders but able to perform for older ones also
  • Full-featured, including dual suspension and front & rear disc brakes
  • Much quieter and easy to use than similarly-sized gas dirt bikes
  • Power and torque to handle true off-road and motocross situations
Things that could be better:
  • Could be a bit much for very young or inexperienced riders

The Razor MX650 is an outstanding value, one that won’t be outgrown as quickly as other models. It could be a great first ‘real’ dirt bike for those ready and able to handle it. I probably wouldn’t put a 6 yr old on this machine, but for those ready and able, this can provide many hours of off-road excitement.

Reviews from other MX650 users

Mike A. from Ohio found this bike to be perfect for his 11 yr old (and not bad for himself, either):

This is a great bike. My 11 year old son loves this bike and rides it almost everyday. The bike has a tremendous amount of power. I weigh 190# and it carried me well on an initial test drive. My 11 year old son who has been riding electric bikes for several years does terrific on this bike. He weighs 65 pounds and is 55″ tall. The bike seems to be perfect for him based on his size and experience riding. The bike is interesting in that it is extremely powerful but size wise is designed for kids 9-12 years old. The box says 16 and up, which is ridiculous. The bike seems well designed and has a nice suspension system and dual disk breaks. The price is unbelievable for what you get but I would only recommend it for kids 9- 12 who have experience riding other powered bikes. The tires are pneumatic however they are very hard and knobby. They are fine for off road use but a slip out fast on slick pavement. Over all a great bike for experienced 9-12 year olds who have a non paved surface to ride on. We didn’t experience any problems mechanically or electrically.

Sheila L. bought this bike, their 5th Razor model among their 6 kids, and loves it:

We have bought 5 different types of Razor electric scooters and bikes for our 6 children and they have all held up well. This model was bought for our 11 year old son. It gives him the feel and look of a real dirt bike, without the danger. It has enough speed for him to be able to handle without it being too much. Nice size too. Goes about 15-17 miles per hour and even though it says it runs about 45 minutes straight on a charge, ours runs approx 1 1/2 hours on a charge. Guess that varies with weight. Razor seems to hold up and their customer service is great too! They go out of their way to satisfy the customer.

Conclusion:

The Razor MX650 is a full-featured mini-motorcycle that can be a great first dirt bike for younger riders ready for the challenge as well as a fun bike for older kids and teens. It has plenty of power and is a legitimate off-road motorbike, but it’s more affordable and MUCH quieter than larger gas-powered bikes. If your child is ready for a real bike, consider the MX650.
